Quartz
First developed in the late 1960s in Japan, the quartz movement is an electronic movement in which a quartz crystal oscillating 32768 times per second serves as the regulating organ (balance). The energy is not supplied by a barrel (the driving force of mechanical watches), but by a battery. The battery produces the energy necessary for the operation of an integrated circuit, while the quartz regulates this energy. Five hundred times more precise and practical (no need to wind them), quartz watches have, in less than a decade, supplanted mechanical and automatic movements, thus ensuring their unshakeable supremacy on the world watchmaking market.
Chronograph
A mechanism added to a watch to measure intervals of time. This mechanism controls a chronograph hand (a second hand) placed in the centre of the dial. By operating a push-button on the side of the case, it can be started, stopped and reset. This hand makes one revolution in one minute. Auxiliary counters on the dial show the number of revolutions, in minutes (30-minute counter) and often also in hours (12-hour counter). 90 % of the chronographs manufactured today are quartz and time to 1/10 of a second.
